In 1987, the Dobell Art Foundation endowed the Sir William Dobell Chair of Art History at the Australian National University (ANU).
The endowment has supported scholarship since then and strengthened the university’s position as a leader in art history and curatorial studies.
The Foundation’s substantial donation has supported the appointment of four Chairs over five decades and continues to advance excellence in teaching, research, and curatorial practice.
In 2024, the ANU launched a new visiting fellows program that enables key academic appointments, including the annual Sir William Dobell Visiting Chair and up to four Visiting Fellows. It brings leading art historians and curators from around the world to the ANU campus. The Foundation’s long-standing partnership with the university enables access to world-class expertise for students, scholars, and the broader art community.
